A man holding the #Israeli flag at the #IStandWithIsrael rally. With the death toll and destruction rising, passion on both sides are also skyrocketing. There were quite a number of heated arguments at this rally when a small, but boisterous counter-protest caused some irritated Israelis to be confrontational. However, cooler heads were able to succeed in persuading their friends to ignore the other side. I saw the same thing happen at the #palestinian rally yesterday.

It is sad to see that the conflict in #Gaza between #Israelis and #Palestinians has escalated again. Hardline thinking from both sides has only managed to worsen the situation. As of today, the @WashingtonPost reported more than 500 Palestinian deaths and 25 Israeli deaths. In this photo, a Palestinian mother cries at a rally in #WashingtonDC yesterday.

January is a month filled with all kinds of festivals in the Philippines. One of them is the Fiesta of the Santo Nino de Pandacan. Like many other festivals, it is filled with a variety of events stretched over several days. Always a favorite among the locals is the beauty pageant where they get to see young men and women showcase their talents and good looks. Each contestant often has an entourage of designers, stylists, and groupies, all present to ensure that their candidate makes the best possible appearance and presentation on stage. The winners are eventually crowned the town’s Lakan (or nobleman) and Mutya (or Jewel). Here is one of the contestants in the spotlight.

I took this picture as my friends and I were heading back home after watching the 4th of July fireworks. We couldn’t be in DC for this, so we just walked to the Air Force Memorial to watch it from afar. The place was already packed when we got there. And so we had to watch the not-so-glorious fireworks through people and trees in front of us. I remember taking a similar picture years ago when I was still using 35mm film. It looked like a mass exodus and it was what I had in mind when I made this one. Fleeing from zombies maybe?

After a pizza dinner and some slices of watermelon, I stood up from the picnic table with my camera in hand. I could not help but go back to my favorite spot where I could look up and see the planes zooming above the people’s heads. But this time I went lower, with the camera almost touching the ground. Looking skywards through a forest of grass — this is perhaps what an instagramming-ant would have seen.

At the top of the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, I was waiting for something to happen. Then it happened! People beside me started gathering around a couple. Recognizing that it was a proposal, I quickly but politely squeezed into position to snap a few pictures. I was a bit surprised and felt lucky to find myself in the prime spot for the photo op. A man then offered me a panoramic shot of the place that he just made using his phone. Hmmm… Huh?! It took me a few seconds to realize that he thought I was the official photographer for the event. :) Well, she said “yes” and the violins started playing.
